Have you ever visited a website just to be amazed about the total lack of creativity of the designer? We are sure you did. We all have access to the same colors and palettes, but only a few web designers could use them in an optimal and an attractive manner.

Let’s start with some simple examples: yellow is a beautiful color. So is green, blue, or red. However, if you try to combine all those colors in the same webpage…the result would be awful. Many beginner web designers won’t realize that too many colors are annoying for the eye. A simple design could have a tremendous success if it is used smartly.

Two colors placed one near the other would change their aspect. We won’t tell you about brain stimulus and subliminal messages. We are sure you played some visual games stating the importance of colors and the tricky combinations that could be created using them. For a website, you must consider the next aspects about the colors used:

  1. The colors, the graphical effects and the background must only improve the aspect of the site, they won’t have to stand out. Even a nice combination of colors could distract the attention of your visitor from the actual content, causing great damage to your traffic
  2. Make sure the text is contrasting with the background. In fact, a pleasant combination between the font and the background is the most important aspect about a great layout for your webpage.
  3. Stay focused on a single color palette for your entire website. Fast color changes while your guest browses different sections of the site would be annoying
  4. Try to find “web safe” colors. These are the colors that look the same in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or any other browser

The basic color theory for web designing

The color theory is a set of basic principles created with the purpose of offering better aspect to your website. If you are using the next principles, you will surely succeed in creating a pleasant website for the eye.

  1. Two opposite colors from the same scheme are pleasant for the eye
  2. Any three colors placed equally in the scheme would create a smooth triangle
  3. Any 4 colors from the scheme that are forming a square would create a pleasant aspect.

The colors must be harmonized with the topic of your site also. For example, red is recommended if you are designing a marketing site. Try not to place flashy texts that are changing their colors. This technique was successful a few years ago, but in our days, a website of this kind is considered dilettante and poorly designed.

If you are designing a presentational website for yourself, try to choose neutral colors like white, yellow, and light brown. A website designed for kids must have a little blue and red in it. There are also some unconventional but effective methods to choose your color palette. For instance, a website for a new social network designed in a blue palette would surely transmit a subliminal message to the brain of the visitor about Facebook. The technique is also tricky: you must learn to use the colors without affecting the originality of your site: a webpage reminding of Facebook would surely be successful, while a site copying Facebook or Twitter would fail, and it could also be the subject of infringement and copyright laws.
